They can withstand years and years (decades, even!) of machine washing and tumble drying.

Simply lay the pad flat on your bed, cover it with a fitted sheet, and you're all set.The pads are cut larger than standard bed sizes, and will shrink to fit upon the first washing. Also, it's not necessarily important that the pad fits exactly to the edge of the top of the mattress, but rather that it completely covers the area where your body rests when you sleep. Pads are about 1/8" - 1/4" thick.
